KoMo Flour Mill Giveaway!

Many of you who follow this blog and my Instagram feed have inquired about the beautiful wooden flour mill that I use to freshly mill my grains into flour.

In fact, there has been so much interest in the mill that the wonderful folks at Pleasant Hill Grain - the American distributor of the KoMo grain mills and flakers - have offered to give a gorgeous KoMo Classic mill to a very lucky Kitchen Vignettes reader. I'm beyond excited that one of you will get to have your very own flour mill and experience the pure joy of fresh-milled flour because there really is nothing like it!!

When we were looking around for a portable flour mill to mill our homegrown grains, we shopped for quite a while and the KoMo mill stood out for many reasons. Aside from being impeccably crafted, it has a powerful and solid motor that quickly turns whole grains into flour of any texture. By simply rotating the hopper, you can adjust for the texture of flour you want, achieving everything from roughly cracked grains, to very coarse flour, to ultra-fine flour. So not only do you have a great degree of control over the milling process, but the mill is also incredibly simple to operate: you just pour the grains into the hopper and out comes the most fragrant, sweet-smelling, fresh flour.

Unbeknownst to a lot of people, much of the whole grain flour we buy has been shipped long distances and left on store shelves for far too long. Many packaged flours have gone rancid even before we purchase them! I'm always surprised how often friends and family don't notice when their flour has gone rancid. I think it's because we've actually become accustomed to the taste of rancid flour and we don't consider flour as a living product with a shelf life. While whole, unmilled grains have a shelf life of many years, as soon as they are milled into flour, the flour becomes perishable and can go rancid within just a few months' time. In fact, some of the vitamin content begins to diminish within just days of the flour being milled. The most important reason I use freshly-milled flour though, is because it makes the best-tasting bread and baked goods. So I'm a huge advocate for home-milling (or sourcing) fresh flour whenever possible. The milling only takes a few minutes and it's incredibly satisfying.

If you’re new to the KoMo Classic mill, here’s the low-down: the mill is built in Austria and beautifully handcrafted out of native beechwood or new American Walnut with finger-jointed corners. All dry grains can be ground in it, including soft or hard wheat, oat groats (dehulled oats), rice, triticale, kamut, spelt, buckwheat, barley, rye, millet, teff, quinoa, amaranth, sorghum and dent (field) corn. It will also grind lentils, dry beans (pinto, red, garbanzo, kidney & more), and dried, non-oily spices. (It isn't suitable for herbs, oilseeds like flax or sesame, popcorn, or fibrous materials).

For people who wish to mill gluten-free flours, Pleasant Hill Grain sells an interchangeable insert that allows the mill to grind different materials without cross-contamination. Using this accessory, your KoMo mill can be used with gluten-containing grains (such as wheat) as well as gluten-free grains (such as teff), without the risk of getting any gluten into your gluten-free flour. The insert is not included in this giveaway, but it can purchased separately here.

Having access to a grain mill really makes you fall in love with the magnificent world of whole grains and the incredible diversity of nutritious and tasty flours that can take your cooking and baking to a whole other level.

You can see the KoMo mill at work in several of my Kitchen Vignettes videos, including the one for Roasted Squash Cornbread where I mill fresh cornmeal from whole field corn kernels and this one for Whole Wheat Groaning Cake. And here's my latest, featuring Rye Crepes:

The KoMo giveaway will run all through the month of April and Rafflecopter will randomly choose a winner on May 1st - just in time for Mother’s Day (hint hint! this would make a wonderful present for any bakers in your life!) The model that Pleasant Hill Grain is giving away is the KoMo Classic grain mill and the winner may choose between the American Walnut or native beechwood housing.

*Please note that this giveaway is only open to residents of the United States. You may also enter the giveaway on my Facebook page. Once you log-in to enter the giveaway, you will see 5 different choices of actions you can take. For each one you do, you will get 5 points, for a potential total of 25 points, increasing your odds of winning. Some of the options can even be repeated each day throughout the giveaway, such as tweeting or visiting the Pleasant Hill Grain website, to increase your odds even more. Good luck everyone!

  2. Thank you so much for sharing about the KoMo Mill! I've been wanting to see what all this whole grain I've had stored away will bake up like using freshly ground product <3

  3. This is awesome! I have wanted to mill my own grain for a while, this would be an excellent place to start!

  4. I have never had fresh milled wheat and wheat breads are one of my favorite foods. I love to bake and am very good at it. I also already bought 3 kinds of spring wheat seeds to plant this year. It will be my first time growing wheat. If it fails there are some very good organic growers that I can order fresh wheat from. I really can't wait to especially try the Sonoran wheat that I've heard such good things about.

  12. I would LOVE to win this flour mill. Milling my own flour is something that sounds so interesting and I'd love to experiment with it, but I can't see myself actually buying a mill at my current situation in life. To win one would allow me to begin a new adventure in the kitchen, something I won't be able to do without it.

  13. Thanks for sharing about the Komo mill. Over the last year, we've transitioned to all organic wheat, which can get very expensive. I would like to make fresh bread each week and cut out the store bought sandwich breads. This would be a good way to do that... Also, because it is so perishable, so much of the good part of wheat is left out of store bought flour. This looks like a beautiful machine and I would love to have one!

  14. I love to bake and my cousin-in-law introduced me to fresh ground grains :) She has a KoMo mill and I've always thought they were so beautiful. I'd love to have one of my own and to bake with my own fresh ground grains!

  15. This flour mill would be an amazing addition to my kitchen because I am gluten intolerant. Research has come out recently that ancient grains are tolerable to people like me. Having the grain mill would allow me to make fresh bread the way bread was intended with enzymes from fresh milled flour and the nutrients intact, which makes the bread more digestible. My experiments with this so far have been personally successful. I can only imagine how wonderful fresh milled flour makes bread taste, especially with Anson Mills grains!

  21. Yes, I would love to use an authentic flour mill. I have grown my own wheat and used a hand grinder or food processor but the flour does't look like what I see being milled in kitchen vignettes. I am second generation Italian so I make my own pasta, bread and cookies. I would love to see the difference a KoMo Flour Mill would make.

    ReplyDelete
  22. My goodness it is beautiful! I would love to start my milling with this. The hand grinder I had simply didn't do the job, and I've been looking for a better version.

  23. Seems as if I have my hands working with flour almost everyday, preparing something delightful for my family. As I am trying to use more whole grains, the KoMo Flour Mill would be a nice addition to my kitchen. Thank you for this opportunity.

  25. How wonderful that you and the folks at Pleasant Hill Grain are giving away this beauty. I'm a wild-yeast sourdough bread maker and still milling my flour in a coffee grinder! I've been saving my pennies, nickels and dimes a couple of years, and not even close to buying this mill--yet. Am I selfish enough to hope I win? Of course I am, but whoever gets it is going to be one lucky baker. Thank you for this tantalizing possibility. I'll have flour dust in my dreams tonight.

  27. What a beautiful mill! The way you cook is my aspiration. I already bake my own bread but this would take my fresh loaves to the next level. The KoMo Mill looks amazing. I'm curious why someone would want to grind lentils, but hopefully I can win the mill and find out!

  38. This KoMo mill is so beautiful! I can imagine that it would be one of those tools that lasts for decades and is well-loved and passed down. As for what I'd do with it, I am trying to be less reliant on generic flour (the more I learn about industrial ag, and bleaching, and bromination....!). I try to support local flour mills where I can, and there are some great ones nearby here in Oregon, but I still sometimes buy generic because of costs. I'd love to have a mill which would help us stretch the budget by buying local whole grains... and end up with FRESH flour!

    ReplyDelete
  39. So beautiful!!! I'm interested in having it as a piece on my counter...and in the difference it would make in breads!

I grew up on wonder bread, Hawaiian Punch and margarine...I have the health issues one might expect to have with such a diet in the growing years. My children also suffer from health issues related to this, and I have thankfully learned a great deal about healthy eating in recent years. My journey to healthy eating has been exciting. I am very proud that I have learned to really cook, and am lacto fermenting my own sauerkraut, pickles and kombucha tea for healthy probiotics. I also only cook/bake with healthy fats. Baking bread was entirely new to me and so much more affordable than trying to buy "healthy" breads without high fructose corn syrup etc. I no longer purchase any bread products or mixes from the store. I have wanted to grind my own grains for breads, pancakes, all baked goods for quite a while. Thus far we have been unable to afford to purchase this wonderful grain grinder. The Komo Classic would add so much nutrition to my families diet. Winning this would be a dream come true and would help me nourish my family as we are all meant to be nourished, with real and delicious food!!

  53. This is so beautiful. I just started making bread - sourdough mostly. I love it so much and have been buying flour from the farmers market and just found out I can do it myself at home. I just love the idea! Bread is such a classic food in our world - and when it's done right I think it's not even as bad as we keep saying it is which is so exciting because it is so good to eat! So kind to give one of these away!

  74. I have bread baking in the oven right now. The smell of bread baking is wonderful. I have tried to grind wheat in the dry container of my Vitamix, but with the amount of flour I need to make large batches of bread, it's not convenient and it's difficult to get a uniform consistency. The KoMo grinder is beautiful to look at, and from the reviews I've read, works as good as it looks.

  89. I think it would be amazing to make my own flour. When watching the documentary In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan, I learned that our bread is far from what it was originally. Taking it back to basics would be fantastic. Basically, if my grandma didn't eat it - or would have no idea what it is - I shouldn't be eating it!

  90. I've always LOVED stone ground grains...such as family's stone ground cornmeal pancakes and graham flour pancakesor rye scones!!! In the 60/70's it used to be easy to get those kinds of grains.....the very expensive now and packaged in fancy bags vs. being commonplace. I would love to win the grinder. It's hard to find the packaged grains that used to taste so good and aren't refined.

I've had fun experimenting with different kinds of wheat berries, and it's just so darn satisfying milling fresh flour right when you need it. I can't believe I never noticed how "off" my store bought flour smelled before. I guess I didn't have a reference point for what fresh flour smells like.
